The model brings the legal department function into focus along eight coherent dimensions, each described across five levels, from unstructured and reactive to strategic and value-driven. It works with the IST → SOLL frame: IST is where the department stands today; SOLL is a chosen ambition, and not every function needs level 5 everywhere. The gap between the two, dimension by dimension, sets the agenda for change.

The eight dimensions are read in relation to one another, because a shortcoming in one area almost always affects the others.

The same model serves two kinds of engagement: developing an individual legal department, and a cohort experience for General Counsel. Both start from the same eight dimensions and the IST → SOLL frame.
